Want to know what I’m obsessed with? The ketogenic (keto) diet!
I’m eating the most deliciously decadent food while losing weight, but to me, the most exciting benefit of the keto diet is that it can slow down aging.
The keto diet is a low carb (around 20 to 50 net carbs per day), high fat diet and its purpose is to transform you into a fat-burning machine by getting your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates for fuel.
Eating lots of carbs promotes inflammation in the body, and inflammation leads to aging. In contrast, the keto diet is anti-inflammatory so it reduces inflammation and slows down the aging process.
The keto diet is low in sugar and less sugar means less aging. Too much sugar leads to a process called glycation, which weakens collagen and leads to the development of wrinkles and sagging skin.
The keto diet increases the production of antioxidants and triggers the release of a chemical called β-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB), which blocks enzymes that cause oxidative stress, protecting your cells from aging.
The keto diet’s emphasis on good quality fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids helps to protect your skin from sun damage.
The high oil content in the keto diet also keeps your skin glowing and hydrated, which decreases the formation of lines and wrinkles.
Animal studies have even found that ketosis, the fat-burning state you reach from following a keto diet, may promote longevity by extending your lifespan and helping you live a longer, healthier life!
